Pressestimmen
"It's not often that you miss your bus stop because you're so engrossed in reading a book about existentialism, but I did exactly that while immersed in Sarah Bakewell's At the Existentialist Café. The story of Sartre, Beauvoir, Camus, Heidegger et al is strange, fun and compelling reading. If it doesn't win awards, I will eat my proof copy" (Katy Guest The Independent on Sunday)"My book of the year is Sarah Bakewell’s At The Existentialist Café, a marvellously rich and evocative journey through one of the most powerful philosophical movements of the twentieth century… This graceful book speaks to our parochial and inward-looking age." (Sudhir Hazareesingh Times Literary Supplement, Book of the Year)"A wonderfully readable combination of biography, philosophy, history, cultural analysis and personal reflection." (John Walsh Independent)"At the Existentialist Café takes us back to…when philosophers and philosophy itself were sexy, glamorous, outrageous; when sensuality and erudition were entwined… [Bakewell] shows how fascinating were some of the existentialists’ ideas and how fascinating, often frightful, were their lives. Vivid, humorous anecdotes are interwoven with a lucid and unpatronising exposition of their complex philosophy… Tender, incisive and fair." (Jane O’Grady Daily Telegraph)"Quirky, funny, clear and passionate…Few writers are as good as Bakewell at explaining complicated ideas in a way that makes them easy to understand." (Craig Brown Mail on Sunday)

If you always wanted a short but informative introduction to existentialist thinking and philosophy but shied away from these scholarly books which make Philosophy seem like an encrypted code, this is your book. Sarah Bakewell did a phenomenal (alright, this goes to the insiders) job by explaining Existentialism and its roots and origins in pre- or proto-existentialist thinking throughout the 19th and 20th century by back referencing to her own infatuation with her subejct to an audience from which the one or the other might have already been heard of, or read of, Existentialism but never went beyond name-dropping like Sartre or de Beauvoir but is curious enough to know more. The book's masterfully composed and reads at instances more like a historical-philosophical novel than a philosophical treatise. Its language is thus comprehensible, given the enormous intellectual challenge its subject represents. Sarah Bakewell makes us understand where Existentialism is coming from, that it has been there disguised for most of the 19th century as a more practical approach to Philosophy rather than the scholarly ivory tower the main current of Philosophy had become during that period. Kierkegaard and Nietzsche are eminent precursors of Existentialism and are treated shortly in Bakewell's book but remain on the fringes. The real focus in the first and evidently most important part of the book lies with "Phenomenology" and its chief representatives Edmund Husserl and, of course, Martin Heidegger. Both, Husserl's and Heidegger's approach to Phenomenology are discussed broadly, never dry but vividly so you feel being drawn back in time whenever Heidegger and Husserl were "symphilosophizing" together and eventually falling apart as Heidegger's thinking took a quite different path than Husserl's. Heidegger's entanglement with the Nazis is discussed as well as the strains this took on his friendship with Karl Jaspers, for example or estranged him completely from his former mentor Husserl and his own talented student Hannah Arendt. That's when the book reveals itself as a true treasure to the reader, making Heidegger's thinking, which was clouded by his heavy language and his never-ending stream of neologisms aroung his main subjects "Being" and "being", understandable and comprehensable. Whoever shied away from "Being and Time", here you get your 101. Then, moving on to Sartre and his studies of Husserl, Heidegger and, when he started out as mixing it all up, peppering it with his own lived experiences, giving birth together with the unforgettable Simone de Beauvoir to what we now know as "Existentialism"...
Sarah Bakewell schreibt sehr gut, erklärt Philosophie so daß man es versteht und erzählt persönliches über die Menschen mit Feingefühl und Humor wo es passt, Zeitgeschichte inklusiv, ein Genuß zu lesen. And wonderful Anglo backmatter in the book, so you can look up and find everything.
Great book would always gift or recommend
Sarah Bakewell managed to make this somewhat dull topic, which philosophy seems to be, as interesting and true-to-life as possible, just as it should be when we’re talking about Existentialism and everyone involved. Following the lives and thoughts of the likes of Sartre, Beauvoir, Heidegger and Co., I learned a lot about 20th Century France and Europe and even more about the fascinating ideas of Existentialism, both where they came from and where they lead to. Whoever is looking for a captivating non-fiction book has found a goldmine in this one.
